Benedict’s general prayer intention for September

Pope Benedict XVI’s general prayer intention for September is “that politicians may always act with honesty, integrity, and love for the truth”

He noted "There is a need for authentically Christian politicians but, even more so,
for lay faithful who witness to Christ and the Gospel in the civil and political community. ... politics is a very important field in which to exercise charity. It calls Christians to a strong commitment to citizenship, to building a good life in one's country, and likewise to an effective presence among the international community's institutions and programmes.

Cardinal Dolan to offer Benediction at Democratic Convention

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops announced that Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the  USCCB, has accepted an invitation from Democratic convention organizers to deliver the benediction on the last night of the Charlotte N.C. event. The invitation was accepted  after clearing it with Charlotte  Bishop Peter J. Jugis in accordance with protocol.
The USCCB announcement made clear to the Democratic Convention organizers, as  had been made clear to the Republicans in accepting their invitation to deliver the benediction at the Republican convention, that the cardinal was coming solely as a pastor, only to pray, not to endorse any party, platform, or candidate".
Clergy from several denominations are scheduled to pray at the opening and closing of each day's sessions of the party conventions carrying on a  tradition that goes back more than 100 years.

Cardinal Dolan to Offer Closing Prayer at Republican Convention

Aug 22, 2012 / 05:07 pm:  Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, head of the U.S.Conference of  Catholic Bishops, has accepted an invitation to offer the closing prayer at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.  Cardinal Dolan will give the concluding benediction prayer on August 30, the final night of the GOP convention, where Mitt Romney is slated to accept the presidential nomination for his party.
In an Aug. 23 statement, New York archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling said that “usual church protocol” requires a request for prayer from the local bishop. Bur after contacting Bishop Robert Lynch of Diocese of Saint Petersburg, Fla., “who gave the Cardinal his approval,” Cardinal Dolan accepted the GOP's invitation.
“It was made clear to the convention organizers, however, that the Cardinal was coming only to pray not to endorse, and that he would be willing to accept a similar offer from the Democratic Party as well,” Zwilling added. “That same sentiment was conveyed to the Democratic National Committee.”
