New Legislative Research Tool For Citizens

The Law Library of Congress  announced its new homepage. It is less text heavy, and more intuitive than its former homepage. The Law Library's new homepage includes a prominent link to its beta legislative research tool, Congress.gov that will eventually transform the Library of Congress's existing congressional information system into a modern, robust and user-friendly resource incorporating all the information available on THOMAS.gov. The beta site will likely  become the congressional information system of choice of the future. Today, it offers  citizens ready access to information on legislation pending or enacted in the current Congress.

USCCB Responds To Statement On HHS Mandate

The statement was made during the Vice Presidential Debate.
The statement: "With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact."
USCCB comment: "The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain 'religious employers.' That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to 'Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,' or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served."

They "create new difficulties for bishops in the exercise of their teaching office" yet they also "offer powerful new tools for more effective ministry."  The document noted a  key benefit of new media: "...they offer the bishop the possibility of communicating with people in a relatively unmediated fashion,"
